Maintenance Guide

Dishwasher Maintenance Schedule (Monthly, Yearly, Lifetime)

Dishwashers last 9-12 years with proper care, 5-7 without. Here's the maintenance schedule.

Schedule at a glance

FrequencyWhat to do
WeeklyWipe the door seal and check for food debris
MonthlyClean the bottom filter (twist out, rinse under hot water)
MonthlyRun an empty cycle with 1 cup of white vinegar on the top rack
QuarterlyInspect spray arm holes and clear blockages with a toothpick
QuarterlyRun a baking soda cycle (1 cup, hot water cycle, empty dishwasher)
YearlyInspect the door gasket for cracks; check for leaks under the unit
YearlyTest the door latch and hinge for play; tighten hinge screws if loose

How to do it

  1. Pull out the bottom dish rack to access the filter assembly at the floor of the tub.
  2. Twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise to unlock it, then lift it out.
  3. Lift out the flat coarse filter underneath.
  4. Rinse both filters under hot running water. Use a soft brush for stuck-on debris.
  5. Wipe out the filter cavity to remove any debris you can see.
  6. Reassemble in the reverse order: flat filter first, then cylindrical filter twisted clockwise to lock.
  7. For the monthly vinegar cycle: place a dishwasher-safe bowl with 1 cup of white vinegar upright on the top rack.
  8. Run a hot cycle with no detergent. The vinegar will dissolve hard water deposits and remove mildew.

Signs you're overdue

  • Dishes coming out with white film or grit
  • Standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle
  • Foul smell when you open the door
  • Cloudy glasses (hard water deposits from clogged spray arms)
  • Higher than usual cycle time (sensor responding to dirty water)
  • Visible mold around the door seal

What it costs

Maintenance under $20/year (vinegar, baking soda, brush). Filter replacement $15-$30 every 5-7 years.

FAQ

Do dishwashers really need monthly cleaning?

Yes. Food particles, grease, and hard-water minerals accumulate inside the filter, spray arms, and tub. Skipping monthly cleaning shortens lifespan by years and produces visibly dirty dishes within 6 months.

Can I use bleach to clean my dishwasher?

Generally no. Bleach can damage rubber gaskets, stainless steel components, and any plastic parts. White vinegar is the safe equivalent. The exception is plastic-tub dishwashers with persistent mold — a 1 cup bleach + empty cycle is OK, but never combine bleach and vinegar.

How long should a dishwasher last?

9-12 years with proper maintenance. 5-7 years if you never clean the filter. Premium brands (Miele, Bosch) reach 15+ years routinely; budget brands rarely exceed 10.

Why do my dishwasher's spray arms stop spinning?

Almost always clogged spray nozzles or a buildup of crystallized hard-water deposits inside the arm. Soak the spray arms in white vinegar for 30 minutes, then use a toothpick to clear individual holes.
