Refrigerator Maintenance: Coil Cleaning, Gasket Inspection, Filter Replacement

Clean coils, inspect gaskets, replace filters. A maintained fridge runs 18-20 years; unmaintained, 10-12.

How to do it

  1. Coil cleaning (the highest-impact task):
  2. 1. Unplug the refrigerator.
  3. 2. Pull it out from the wall (most fridges have wheels or feel slide-out).
  4. 3. Locate the coils — on most modern fridges, they're on the bottom front behind a kick plate. On older models, they're on the back.
  5. 4. Remove the kick plate (snaps off or has a few screws).
  6. 5. Vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. Use a coil cleaning brush ($10) for deeper cleaning between fins.
  7. 6. Vacuum the fan and motor area as well.
  8. 7. Reinstall the kick plate, plug back in.
  9. Gasket inspection:
  10. 1. Open the door. Wipe the gasket (the rubber seal around the door frame) with warm soapy water.
  11. 2. Check for tears, hardening, or visible gaps.

How much does dirty coils cost me per year?

Roughly $100-$200/year in extra electricity for a fridge with year-old dirty coils. The compressor works much harder when coils are insulated by dust. This is the single most underappreciated home maintenance task.

Why does my fridge make a clicking sound every few minutes?

Usually the start relay — a small electronic component that starts the compressor. When it's failing, the compressor tries to start, fails, and clicks repeatedly. Cheap part ($20-$40), DIY-replaceable, but if you ignore it the compressor will fail ($800+ to replace).

Can I freeze my fridge gasket back to shape?

Yes, sort of. If the gasket is creased from being closed funny, you can apply petroleum jelly along the seal line — this temporarily restores flexibility. But if the gasket is cracked or hardened, it must be replaced.

How long should my refrigerator last?
