How to do it

  1. Quarterly test (simplest, most important task):
  2. 1. Remove the pump cover from the basin.
  3. 2. Pour 5 gallons of water into the basin.
  4. 3. Watch the float rise. The pump should engage when water reaches the trigger point.
  5. 4. Verify water exits through the discharge pipe.
  6. 5. Once the basin is empty, the pump should automatically stop.
  7. 6. If any step fails, troubleshoot before the next rainstorm.
  8. Annual cleaning:
  9. 1. Unplug the pump.
  10. 2. Disconnect the discharge pipe (usually a union fitting above the pump).

  • Pump runs continuously without water level dropping (impeller failure or discharge blocked)
  • Visible rust or corrosion on the pump or float
  • Loud grinding or rattling during operation
  • Water in basement (obvious — pump failed)
  • Battery backup indicator showing 'fault' or 'replace battery'
